April 2015, London Region Volunteers Conference
Diabetes UK has chosen our group for an Inspire Award for London Region Local Groups and Communities!
This recognises our work to expand the group over the last year to reach many more people with diabetes in our area.
We started bi-monthly evening meetings in May 2014 in addition to running our monthly daytime meetings for the last 18 years.
Roz Rosenblatt, London Manager at Diabetes UK, said: “The hard-working Carshalton group has held regular afternoon meetings at St Helier Hospital for many years and recently they have added a regular evening meeting - at the Friends Meeting House in Cedar Road, Sutton - so that people who are out at work in the daytime could attend.
"This involved a lot of extra work for the group but it is already reaping dividends. The evening meeting attracts a wider range of people, including younger people with Type 1 Diabetes. One of the people at the first meeting was a mother of a younger child with Type 1 - and she is now working to set up a Family Support Group for the borough. This will really boost the level of support offered to people with diabetes in the area.”
The award was received at the Diabetes UK London Region Volunteers Conference on April 25th 2015 by our Chairman, Gwen Sims and our Secretary, Jenny Brunton
